Could earthing be the missing link to achieving optimal health? Could it be just as important as getting adequate nutrition and sun exposure? That might not seem like such a bad assumption when observing the clinical studies conducted on the subject, while at the same time viewing it from an evolotionary perspective.
So what does the term ”earthing” mean exactly? Earthing reffers to our body being connected to the earths inherent electrical field. From the beginning of our human existence, all the way up until the 20th century, humans have been more or less in close contact with the earth. We were walking barefoot, sleeping on or close to the ground, even when we started wearing shoes made of leather, we were still in contact with this electric field, as the leather didn’t prevent the connection from occuring. It wasn’t
until we started producing shoes with material that isolated us from the ground,
in addition to working, living and sleeping further from the ground (in modern,
several story buildings) that we lost our contact with the earth.
Studies that’s been conducted have shown impressive results with a broad spectrum of health conditions, with one of the most important ones being inflammation. Inflammation is being discussed in the scientific literature as an underlying cause of at least 80 different chronic health conditions, including some of the most widespread and major diseases today. The connection between earthing and inflammation exists in the
understanding of inflammation as being a condition of energy imbalance. The
body’s natural response, in order to quench inflammation is to send electrons
to the inflamed area, in order to neutralize the free radicals. The same thing
is achieved by walking barefoot on the ground, and the body then recieves electrons
from the earth.
Here are just some of the health benefits seen with earthing, based on studies that have been done on the subject:
– reduction or elimination of symptoms caused by health conditions related to
inflammation. Types of improvements seen includes reduced pain symptoms, as
well as improvement of milder inflammatory conditions such as milder muscle
aches and tension headaches.
– a marked improvement in the quality of sleep, seen in most cases, as well as
reduction or prevention of “jet-lag” (a disruption of the sleeping
pattern when traveling across different time zones).
– reduction of stress due to the earths energy having a calming effect on the
body. Also improving the time needed for the body to recuperate after intense
– improvements of blood related conditions, such as having a blood thinning
effect and improving blood circulation
– dramatic improvements seen in the tissue healing of wounds.
The list goes on…
While the evidence exists for a reduction of inflammation and improvement of other conditions, there’s not proof yet, but the evidence certainly seems to be pointing in that direction. However, the Earthing Institute highlights the neeed for larger studies to be performed before any conclutions can be made.
So how can one experience the positive benefits of earthing in todays society?
Some of the options for reconnecting with the earth includes: wearing shoes like vibram five fingers when outside, walking barefoot when possible or investing in a mat, specifically designed to give you the same exposure to energy as one would recieve by walking barefoot on the ground outside. This allows you to have the benefits of earthing with the mat placed beneath your feet while working on your computer or while watching TV.
